This is my debut EP. This small collection of songs are raw (as in "no frills") but I feel it's the most honest representation of me at this stage. Music has always been a major part of my life but, for whatever reason, I've never taken the step to actually record something for release... until my brother-in-law asked me to record some music for his podcast a couple of years ago. So I started writing and recording from home and that's basically where the music is coming from. It started in the attic of our home in Memphis, Tennessee.
About six years ago my wife and I moved to Memphis. It's there we learned about ourselves. It's there we made so many great friends that we'll have for the rest our lives. And it's there we grew our family with two baby girls, now four and one years old. For those reasons among many others, it was an honor and privilege to record in the city that made me who I am today. To that point, I'm grateful that I got to record the old fashioned way, in a studio built head to toe from a multitrack art sound straight out of the 60's. It captures a little bit of Memphis that I'll take with me forever. (A special thanks to Scott McEwen at Memphis Magnetic. From day one he was such a warm, welcoming person). This was the first time I'd ever recorded in a proper studio and we had to get this EP done in a single day. He was so great about the whole thing and so kind.
The four songs I chose for this EP tell the story of the here and now of my personal life. Whether it's a heavier idea, questioning what I'm doing with my life in the first track ("What To Do..."), or voicing frustration about the tumultuous relationship between me and my cell phone (My Cell), these songs tell the story of my life as I am experiencing it through my own personal lens. I'd like to think they are simple in thought and something that other people can relate to.
I traditionally have written acoustic, Folk/Americana songs primarily and hope to release a record soon with those songs in mind. So it's funny that my first release should be a full band, indie rock EP. But what can I say? I love making noise. There's nothing better than making noise with your friends. So I was so pumped to have Jeff Pates play drums. He's such a joy to be around, a dear friend, and a great drummer. It's thanks to him that I got Andy Willhite to play Bass as well. The three of us had jammed as Jeff's house a couple of times before and something just felt right about it. I can't thank the both of them enough for simply being good people, and being willing to give up a long Saturday to do this thing with me.
I have to thank my brother-in-law and friend, Mike Hilburn, the wonderfully creative guy behind The Sourdough Podcast. This EP probably wouldn't exist without you. Lastly but most importantly, I have to thank my favorite people in the world: my girls. Daley, Magnolia Jade, and Rooney Bea. Writing songs without you in mind is lame, and so is life for that matter.
I hope you listen to this EP and enjoy it. I hope you smile, nod your head, close your eyes, maybe even sing along. Cheers!
