East to West

by Weston Perry

about

This collection of songs cover a few years of planning and executing a move across country from Memphis, Tennessee to Modesto, California. "East to West" is much about that transition and a little about nothing in particular. It's been a weird one (2020 stuff...) and I think the album is just as weird in an endearing kind of way. Anyway, the ideas for the songs aren't wildly unoriginal so perhaps you can relate. I had a blast recording with new friends, in a new part of the country where I am not from. The memories of staying up late nights in The Makery are felt all throughout this record. It's the same room where Chris, his wife and two young boys tinker on art projects, make bow and arrows, boy scout projects, and whatever else creative you can think up and create. There's always an air in the room which can be felt on a record. For me, the air in The Makery will always be felt.

Chris Giambelluca (Calexico and other Tucson projects) is much to thank - First of all, for being a kind, wonderful human. But also for the work and love put in to making this record in his garage (Studio affectionately named "El Camino Makery"). Chris engineered, mixed, and mastered everything using primarily his collection of beautiful things collected over many years as a touring musician, music shop owner, session player and sound engineer.

Jordan Smallwood (Goodbye Elliot, and a laundry list of Central Valley bands) laid down the drums. Jordan is the first musician I met in the Central Valley and we've been playing together ever since. Everyone knows Jordan. You may catch him on a random night in Santa Cruz playing with Alex Lucero, or gigging with the likes of Willy Tea Taylor or Brett Dennen. Jordan is a respected drummer and also become a real pal.

Marc Putnam (Midnight Mystery Club, Durbin, etc.) put down all those slammin' lead guitar licks you'll hear in songs like "Good to be Alone," "Glenrio," or "How Many Miles." Marc is the kindest shredder you'll ever meet. It's way too much fun to be in a room with Marc and ask him to play something, almost like a cheat code on a video game.

It was super fun recording with these fellas. We started playing together at a time full of big transition in my life. East to West is an expression of all the hopes, fears, gratitude and warmth that come from big life changes.

Thanks to Jordan for introducing me to Chris and Marc. Big huge thanks to Melissa, Dominic and Calvin who are very much felt on this record. And thank you, music, for connecting me to great humans who also happen to be great musicians.
